We often celebrate athletes for their incredible feats on the court, but what about the impactful work they do when the cameras are off? Lakers superstar LeBron James is a prime example, with his dedication to community often going unnoticed by many fans.
For University of Michigan students Sikander “Sonny” Khan and Taha Syed, James is more than just a basketball icon. “LeBron is a role model,” shares Khan. Syed adds, “I’ve always been a LeBron follower because of his playing style on the court and how he gives back to his hometown in Akron, Ohio.”
Inspired by James’s commitment, Khan and Syed decided to honor him in a unique way: by naming a well after him in Pakistan. Located in the Mirpur Khas District of Sindh, this isn’t just any well; it tells a powerful story of global impact.
Khan and Syed are deeply involved with Paani, a nonprofit organization founded in 2017 by student volunteers. “Paani,” meaning water in Urdu, is dedicated to tackling Pakistan’s severe water and sanitation crisis. Khan, a co-founder, notes that Pakistan is estimated to face water scarcity by as early as 2025.
Through their tireless efforts, Paani has raised nearly $100,000, building over 200 wells and providing clean water access to more than 20,000 people. Beyond water, the organization has also donated over $1 million worth of medical supplies, feminine hygiene products, and children’s clothing to these same communities.
Paani makes a point of dedicating wells to public figures who use their platforms to champion social issues and uplift communities. LeBron James was a natural choice due to his powerful symbolism of empowerment. Other notable figures honored include Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Jaden Smith, alongside wells dedicated to small businesses and families.
“There are many athletes who use their platforms to bring awareness on social issues, but LeBron is the most visible,” explains Syed. “He does the most and talks about social issues to help his community.”
James’s own initiatives, such as the I Promise School, the LeBron James Family Foundation, and his partnerships with the University of Akron and Walmart, perfectly align with Paani’s mission. As Syed points out, “What LeBron and Paani have both realized is that it is important to give back to where you came from.”
Both Khan’s and Syed’s parents are originally from Pakistan, and their desire to give back stems from the sacrifices their parents made to provide them with better lives in the U.S.
“Many people in Akron and Pakistan are in adverse situations but for those of us that are in a position of opportunity, we can leverage this to elevate those communities and enable them to enjoy the same positive outcomes,” says Syed. He concludes, “By spreading awareness, we hope to create opportunities for those who need them most.”
